Big Sandy Gas Field

The Big Sandy Gas Field has grown to be the largest natural gas field in the Appalachian Basin. In total the field covers approximately 1,500,000 acres. The primary reservoir in the Big Sandy Field is the Ohio Formation of Devonian Age. The Ohio is a thick (500'–1800'), organic rich, fractured shale. Some wells produce over 50 years from the Ohio. Secondary conventional reservoirs are also productive in the Big Sandy Field. Though classified as secondary reservoirs these formations are capable of producing substantial reserves when located. Collectively the Primary and Secondary reservoirs within the Big Sandy have yielded more than 2.5 TCF (Trillion Cubic Feet) of natural gas. The Big Sandy was ranked by the EIA in 2001 as the 17th top US gas field by virtue of proven reserves.

Located within the Big Sandy Gas Field, Pike County is Kentucky’s eastern-most county, a rural area comprised of forest-covered hills, bordered by Virginia and West Virginia. Named after Zebulon Pike, this county was also home to the famous Hatfield and McCoy feuds. Pikeville is the largest city with a population around 10,000.

Exploration for Devonian natural gas in the area dates from 1926. Since that time, over 3,000 gas wells have been drilled. Since 1990, over 100 new gas wells have been drilled each year, with completion success-rates approaching 100%. Today, Pike County is one of the largest natural gas producing counties in the eastern United States, generating over 30 billion cubic feet annually.
